Position Overview
The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire a Residential Care Worker to provide specialized functions in the care, supervision, and development of visually impaired children at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. The Residential Care Worker serves as a member of a care team, plans, and actively supervises the play activities of the children using materials which will contribute to the child’s interests, motivation and learning experience and observes the children in all phases of daily activities.
Essential Functions
- Provides specialized functions in the care, supervision, and development of visually impaired children at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired.
- Plans and actively supervises the play activities of the children using materials which will contribute to the child’s interests, motivation and learning experience. Maintains order and discipline.
- Observes the children in all phases of daily activities.
- Assists in and travels with students to ensure the safe transit of students to and from school, home, classes, and activities on and off campus.
- Serves as a member of a care team.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to an A.A. degree, preferably in childcare, sociology or human services, OR Requires two (2) years of experience in the care and supervision of children as could be gained in a day care facility or Head Start Program.
- Requires the completion of an agency approved training program OR an additional year of the above experience.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to travel.
- Upon employment, employee will be subject to Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test.
- Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Training Schedule: 6 Weeks of classroom training 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday plus additional on the job training as needed on all of the following shifts up to 3 weeks in each shift listed below:
12:30am-8:30am, 6:30am-2:30pm, 11am-7pm, 2:30pm- 10:30pm, 4:30pm-12:30am
