Position Overview

Under general direction, performs responsible lead worker duties in directing the complex physical plant and maintenance at the Illinois School for the Deaf.  Assigns work and evaluates performance of technical and trade staff.  Serves as liaison with contractors on campus.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates activities of trade and power plant staff responsible for building maintenance.
  2. Prepares reports pertinent to maintenance and operation of physical plant, such as cost reports, personnel reports, requisitions, and other periodic reports essential to budget preparation and balancing.
  3. Consults with the school’s administration as well as craftsmen for determining recommendations regarding necessity, practicality and advisability of improvements or repairs to existing facilities.
  4. Serves as designated lead worker to lower level staff.
  5. Prepares written reports and develops scopes for Capitol Development Board projects for the Illinois School for the Deaf.
  6. Prepares written reports and develops repair and maintenance five year and seven year plans for the Illinois School for the Deaf. 
  7. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires seven years of experience in the operation of a commercial or institutional power plant or as a skilled craftsman in the mechanical or building trades.
  3. Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules *.

* The possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 encompasses positions which perform refrigeration/air-conditioning work that has the possibility of release of chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
  2. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law. 

Work Hours:  Mon - Fri, 8:00am - 4:30pm
