Position Overview
The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer to monitor and maintain the operation of medium temperature and medium pressure water heating system. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on powerhouse equipment in the Power Plant. This position conducts analysis of boiler, drinking and zeolite softened water. Monitors and maintains stream generators. Conducts periodic inspections of chillers and cooling towers. Maintains daily logs; monitors the operation of water softeners and regenerates softeners; and maintains the inventory of material and heating plant supplies.
Essential Functions
- Monitors and maintains the operation of medium temperature and medium pressure water heating system and generators at the main heating plant.
- Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on powerhouse equipment in the Power Plant.
- Conducts analysis of boiler, drinking and zeolite softened water.
- Monitors and maintains stream generators in outlying buildings.
- Conducts periodic inspections of chillers and cooling towers.
- Maintains daily logs.
- Monitors the operation of water softeners and regenerates softeners.
- Maintains the inventory of material and heating plant supplies.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years elementary school.
- Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Four (4) years of specialized experience in the operation of high-pressure/low-pressure coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their apparatuses.
- Three (3) years of specialized experience in water treatment and various chemicals used in boiler systems.
- Three (3) years of specialized experience diagnosing problems in mechanical, electrical, heating and air conditioning/HVAC systems.
- Three (3) years of professional experience directing the work of employees and outside contractors engaged in the operation and maintenance of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
- Three (3) years of experience taking utility readings, logging records, ensuring maintenance schedules are followed, reviewing and actioning maintenance reports for technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
- Three (3) years of experience diagnosing building and mechanical issues, recognizing potentially dangerous situations, and implementing appropriate emergency responses.
- Three (3) years of specialized experience in public health Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and building codes of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
- Three (3) years of experience following and expressing complex ideas clearly both orally and in written form in the field of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules* or the ability to obtain such certificate within 6 months of employment.
* The possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 encompasses positions which perform refrigeration/air-conditioning work that has the possibility of release of chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere.
- Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
