Position Overview:
As a Buildings/Grounds Maintenance Worker for the Division of Forensic Science; Performs semi-skilled tasks including carpentry, masonry, electrical, painting and plumbing assignments; performs semi-skilled labor in the maintenance of boilers, repairs leaks in water and gas lines, removes old parts and installs new mechanical washers and gaskets in boiler circulating pump, fits and seals valves, couplings and other fittings; performs minor plumbing, air conditioning, and/or electrical repair; pulls electrical wire, installs conduit and electrical boxes; replaces switches and outlets; changes fuses; installs motors and belts; cleans convectors and filters; helps install and remove pipe and fittings; performs maintenance, repairs, and installations including, but not limited to, fences/gates, doors/hardware, locks, windows, appliances, laboratory/office furniture, and building and grounds equipment; constructs and installs shelves, door/wall partitions, panels, temporary enclosures, and other basic carpentry projects, as required; patches and/or replaces drywall; replaces old and/or lays new floor tile, baseboards, and carpeting; constructs forms for concrete and mixes mortar; repairs roof leaks; assists other craftsmen as required; operates building and grounds equipment and utilizes hand and power tools as circumstances dictate; Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and buffs floors; vacuums and cleans carpets; cleans and disinfects restrooms and fixtures, refills dispensers; cleans laboratory work area tops, cabinets, walls, and blinds; mows and fertilizes lawn, trims hedge, removes weeds, rakes leaves, waters lawn and shrubbery; sweeps walks and entrances; removes snow and ice from walks and parking areas as needed; loads/unloads trucks of office and laboratory supplies and equipment; travel as necessary to transport laboratory supplies and equipment; disassembles/assembles office furniture and moves office laboratory equipment; operates pallet lift and pallet/hand trucks. Essential Functions
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks and non-skilled labor for the Joliet Forensic Science
Laboratory. - Performs a variety of indoor laboratory/office building janitorial duties.
- Performs grounds/parking lot maintenance and upkeep.
- Performs manual labor.
- Assists nearby ISP facilities with janitorial needs.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school plus one
year of maintenance work experience preferably associated with the building and mechanical trades
and/or heavy equipment operation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers two (2) years of experience cleaning and/or maintaining a facility using appropriate tools, equipment, and materials.
- Prefers two (2) years of experience maintaining a facility’s grounds and lawn using appropriate tools, equipment, and materials.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience in using hand and power tools for construction, installation, repair, and/or maintenance activities in a facility.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience in utilizing and complying with safety standards when performing semi-skilled manual work, using power tools, and/or operating heavy equipment.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience in one or more of the building and mechanical trades.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience with following oral and written instructions including blueprints, installation guides, assembly instructions, and/or other diagrams.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, kneel, crawl, and climb ladders as circumstances may
dictate. - Successful completion of initial and on-going, random, alcohol and drug screens.
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- Successful completion of a polygraph examination.
- Ability to adhere to Illinois State Police’s ethical standards.
- Ability to adhere to Illinois State Police’s policies and procedures.
- Possess a valid driver’s license to transport or travel on an as-needed basis.
