Position Overview

Under general supervision, performs housekeeping functions at the Joliet Inpatient Treatment Center (JITC) by maintaining the cleanliness and sanitary environment of living areas as assigned; cleans, washes, sweeps, mops, strips, seals, waxes, buffs, operates a variety of cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, polishers, vacuum cleaners (wet and dry), and buffers.  Gathers soiled clothing and linen to central area to be picked up. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs housekeeping duties on assigned living areas including all offices, lobbies, bathrooms, showers, activity/training rooms, break areas, hallways, auditorium, and conference rooms.
  2. Operates and maintains cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, polishers, vacuum cleaners (wet and dry), and buffers.
  3. Cleans woodwork, toilets, washrooms, fixtures, ceilings and vents.
  4. Maintains stocks of supplies and notifies supervisor when supplies become low.
  5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Requires working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in institution housekeeping.
  2. Requires working knowledge of the preparation of requisitions and work orders.
  3. Requires ability to use both electric and manual cleaning tools ordinarily used in various cleaning activities.
  4. Requires ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies.
  5. Requires ability to work under physically demanding conditions.
  6. Requires ability to handle patient problems with patience and firmness if necessary.
  7. Requires ability to communicate effectively orally and when writing and submitting reports, inventory records or other paperwork.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to pass the Illinois Department of Corrections background check.
  2. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois.  Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department's zero tolerance Drug Testing policy.  The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited. ​
  3. Governor Pritzker announced a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all State employees whose job duties require them to work in a congregate care facility. All 24/7 congregate-care facilities operated by the Illinois Department of Corrections are included in this mandate, which is scheduled to take place October 26, 2021.  Administration is currently in negotiations with AFSCME for employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement in regard to this mandate.  The State will offer the exemptions required under law for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical and/or religious reasons.
