Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Physician Specialist Option B for the Joliet Inpatient Treatment Center (JITC) located in Joliet, Illinois to perform general medical examinations on all patients served on the Mental Health (MH) units. Provides diagnostic and treatment services. Provides facility-side consultation in internal medicine to all medical staff working in the MH units. Provides in-service training to other staff.  Serves as an intermediary and advocate for patients during inter-facility transfer consultations, treatment and outpatient care. Serves as Physician on Call.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Within the Mental Health (MH) units, performs general medical examinations on all patients served on the MH units.
  2. Makes daily rounds within the MH units evaluating patients’ progress and treatment and effectiveness of prescribed medications.
  3. Serves as an intermediary and advocate for patients during inter-facility transfer consultations, treatment, and outpatient care.
  4. Serves as Physician on Call.
  5. Provides facility-side consultation in internal medicine to medical staff.
  6. Serves as an active member on committees to provide expertise in the areas of treatment, development, etc.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires a valid State of Illinois Physician and Surgeon License.  
  2. Requires American Board Certification in the job-related medical specialty of Internal Medicine.  

Preferred Qualifications

  1. One (1) year of professional experience evaluating and providing quality medical care to adult patients.
  2. One (1) year of professional experience coordinating medical services with other professional disciplines and supportive personnel.
  3. One (1) year of professional experience evaluating, diagnosing and treating adult patients in accordance with best practices. 
  4. One (1) year of professional experience communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  5. One (1) year of professional experience preparing comprehensive and specialized medical records and reports.
  6. One (1) year of professional experience treating adults with mental illness.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the possession of a valid Illinois Controlled Substance License.
  2. Requires the possession of a valid United States Drug Enforcement Administration Certificate of Registration.
  3. Requires the ability to meet the requirements of and be appointed to the medical staff association of the Joliet In-Patient Treatment Center within 30 days of employment.
  4. Requires the ability to serve on-call after business hours, weekends, evenings/nights and holidays.
  5. Requires ability to pass the IDOC background check.
  6. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
