Position Overview

The Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to hire an energetic Activity Therapy Program Director to carry out a comprehensive training program for adults with intellectual disabilities who have severe medical and/or behavioral needs and supervises educators, rehab instructors, activity therapists, technicians, and volunteers in the field of recreational and work activities at the Shapiro Center in Kankakee.

Job Responsibilities

1. Serves as the Activity Therapy Program Director for the Shapiro Center.

 

2. Serves as full-line supervisor.

 

3. Assists in the development and, in conjunction with the director of staff development, carrying out of a comprehensive training program for educators, rehab workshop instructors, activity therapists, technicians and volunteers in the field of activity.

 

4. Serves as a consultant to unit directors and other executive level staff regarding Activity Therapy and its relation to the overall program of the Center.

 

5. Ensures compliance with State and Federal standards and ensures Shapiro policies and procedures are implemented.

 

6. Serves as liaison with community groups and agencies and other department facilities to develop resources and activity services for individuals of this Center.

 

7. Directs support personnel responsible for cleaning assigned areas.

 

8. Verifies the accurate and timely completion of ancillary service information for inclusion in individuals’ habilitation plans.

 

9. Serves as an Administrator on Duty (AOD) on a rotating basis, exercising full authority after business hours, weekend, and holidays.

 

10. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college with course work in a social or human services field.
  2. Requires three (3) years progressively responsible administrative experience in a health or human services organization.

Preferred Qualifications (in priority order)

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
  2. Three (3) years of professional supervisory experience assigning work, providing guidance to subordinates, recommending counseling and/or discipline following collective bargaining agreements, training staff, preparing and signing performance evaluations, and approving time off.
  3. Three (3) years of professional experience organizing, planning, executing, controlling, and evaluating the operation of an activity therapy program for a public or private organization.
  4. Three (3) years of professional experience carrying out of a comprehensive training program in a public or private organization.
  5. Three (3) years of professional experience writing policies, procedures and guidelines for an activity program in a public or private organization.
  6. Three (3) years of professional experience communicating in oral and written form with internal and external stakeholders.
  7. Three (3) years of professional experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  8. Three (3) years of professional experience in the development of habilitation plans.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to travel.
  2. Ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotation basis as Administrator on Duty (AOD).

Work Hours:  Mon - Fri, 8:00am - 4:30pm, Evening & Weekend Hours Based on Operational Needs
