Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire Site Technician II's at Stephen A Forbes State Recreation Area for The Office of Land Management. This position will perform routine grounds maintenance and janitorial duties, including plowing snow, plumbing repairs, HVAC maintenance, use and maintenance of a variety of power tools, trucks, tractors, and farming machinery. The Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area, located 15 miles northeast of Salem in Marion County, was originally only 20 acres with a two-acre pond being the only water available. Since that time in 1959, additions have been made which bring the total current park area to 3,103 acres. Of this total, 1,150 acres are forests of oak and hickory which surround a large lake. The lake was completed in 1963 and has 18 miles of shoreline.  We welcome all interested candidates to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the operation and maintenance of the grounds, facilities, and equipment at Stephen A Forbes and its satellite locations. 
  • Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains and makes improvements to site grounds, trails, waterways, spillways, beaches, marina, wildlife habitat plots, day use areas, field trial areas, equestrian and main campgrounds.
  • Participates in the operations of the sites.
  • Assists with the safety and security of the sites.
  • On a seasonal basis, provides training and guidance to seasonal, volunteer, and contractual employees to familiarize them with facilities, programs, etc. 
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
  • Two (2) years of experience in informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.

  6. Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Work Hours:  March 16 thru Dec. 15: 7:30am-3:30pm, Sun/Mon off; Dec. 16 thru March 15: 7:30am-3:30pm, Sat/Sun off.
