Job Responsibilities

Under Direction and in accordance with established standards, procedures and policies, functions as a lead worker of both professional nursing and sub-professional personnel in an assigned patient care unit; coordinates professional personnel in an assigned patient care unit; utilizes professional training and expertise in the field of nursing to assure that other personnel assigned to patient health care correctly carry out assigned duties.


1. Provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services as needed such as medical treatment, administration of medications, patient assessments, nursing interventions, making patient rounds, preparing, and maintaining patient unit records.


2 Serves as an active member of the Nursing Policy & procedure Committee and Nursing Quality Assurance Committee.

3. Assists physicians on daily rounds.

4. Serves as Charge Nurse.

5. Serves as designated lead worker.

6. Responds when called for crisis situations.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires  possession of one of the following options; (a) graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing and two years of progressively responsible professional nursing experience OR (b) a bachelor's degree in nursing and one year of professional nursing experience OR (c) a master's degree in nursing.
  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers two (2) years of experience working as a Charge Nurse.
  • Prefers one (1) year of experience writing nursing policies and procedures.
  • Prefers current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires extensive knowledge of professional nursing principles and procedures and theory.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of normal and abnormal reactions to various drugs and medications.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of set up, application and use and care of specialized medical equipment.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of the methods and techniques utilized in developing educational programs. 
  • Requires extensive knowledge of pharmacology or commonly prescribed medicines and drugs and their therapeutic and possible adverse reactions.
  • Requires ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships with patient care staff. 
  • Requires ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires ability to instruct non-nursing personnel in the proper practices and procedures of patient care.
  • Requires ability to apply emergency medical techniques such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, control of bleeding and airway maintenance.
  • Requires ability to guide, motivate, orient, and educate assigned patient care staff.


Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
  • Requires the ability to pass a background check, drug screen and physical.
