Position Overview

Dickson Mounds, located in west-central Illinois, is one of the major on-site archaeological museums in the United States. This 235-acre property features a museum, ecavated remains of three early Indian buildings, an outdoor stage, picnic grounds (with a shelter, playground & restooms), several relocated area historic buildings, walking trails, and restored prairie. Under direct supervision of the Associate Director of Dickson Mounds, the Site Technician II regularly carries out semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the grounds, buildings, furnishings, fixtures, and off-road equipment. Additional duties include: the collection and hauling of trash & debris from around the site; coordinating the maintenance and repairs of State vehicles; assistancing with on-site interpretive events & activities; and providing direction for intermittent or seasonal workers performing unskilled manual labor and routine tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of this historic site. Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, maintains museum grounds.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance of off-road vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists in implementing the safety and security programs at the site.
  • Maintains interior cleanliness of maintenance shed and assigned outbuildings.
  • Provides support to the interpretive programs of the site.
  • On an intermittent or seasonal basis, provides leaderships and direction to volunteers, Natural Resources/Historic Preservation Workers and other site staff.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
  • Requires two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or farm machinery and implements.
  • Elementary knowledge of building maintenance and cleaning tools and methods.
  • One (1) year of experience in informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
