Position Description and Responsibilities

 

Under the direct supervision of the Stationary Engineer - Chief, performs journeyman level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance and repair of wood articles, buildings and equipment; guides and directs offender assistants.

 

30%       Performs general carpentry work at Lincoln Correctional Center in the repair, maintenance, contstruction and alteration of walls, doors, furniture, roofing and other wooden articles or structures.

 

25%       Performs carpentry functions throughout the facility and grounds.

 

20%       Guides and directs inmates assigned to the carpenter crew.

 

20%       Maintains and cleans carpenter shop and tools.

 

05%       Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

  1. Requires knowledge, skills and mental development equivalent to comletion of four years of high school.
  2. Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
  3. Requires extensive knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and standard practices of teh trade.
  4. Requires skill in the use of tools and machines of the trade.
  5. Requires ability to instruct beginners in the trade.
  6. Requires ability to direct unskilled workers.
  7. Requires ability to read, interpret and work from plans, simple drawings or sketches.
  8. Requires ability to make simple arithmetical computations and bulk estimates of materials needed.

  1. Requires the ability to pass the Illinois Department of Corrections background check.
