Position Overview:
The Department of Juvenile Justice is seeking a motivated and skilled candidate to serve as the Corrections Food Service Supervisor. The ideal candidate for this position will possess previous food service experience and will be comfortable leading by example and providing instruction to the youth in our care. The incumbent in this position will be comfortable following a master menu and making independent decisions regarding food quality, supply needs, portion control, and many other aspects within the dietary unit. Essential Functions:
- Monitors youth in preparation and serving of food for youth and in maintaining equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Monitors youth in clean-up and sanitation procedures for kitchen equipment and facilities.
- Inspects food before, during, and after cooking to ensure proper preparation in compliance with recipes and menus.
- Maintains inventory and records of food items used and their expiration dates.
- Monitors daily activities of youth allowing food supplies, tools, and cleaning supplies to be property issued and accounted for.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires two (2) years of experience in food preparation in large-scale food operation.
- Requires possession of a current Food Service Sanitation Certificate issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health or requires possession of a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification from a program accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Conference for Food Protection (CFP).
*This title is included as an Upward Mobility Program certificate title.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience monitoring and ensuring compliance with food sanitation requirements.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience instructing and/or supervising youth in congregate care or an equivalent setting.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining inventory and records of food items.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience ensuring conformance with the provisions of the Illinois Food Service Sanitation rules and regulations.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience utilizing a master menu to estimate quantity of supplies/material needed.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience ensuring proper portion control of food items served.
- Prefers the ability to plan and lay out work according to requirements of assignment/s.
- Prefers working knowledge of food and nutritional values.
- Prefers the ability to track and monitor expiration dates.
Conditions of Employment:
- All candidates must be over the age of 21.
- Requires the ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, by an employee, regardless of position held is prohibited.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour ‘on call’ capacity."
- This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
- Requires completion of an orientation-training course within six (6) months of employment.

Over 900 staff members from across various departments—security, programming, education, mental health, and more—collaborate with the understanding that youth are physically, emotionally, and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental, treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency, engages families, and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois’ communities.
