Position Overview

Under direct supervision of the Natural Resources Site Manager, performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with the operation and maintenance of the James C. Helfrich Game Propagation Center.

Job Responsibilities

1.    Participate in all aspects of caring for pheasant breeders;

  • Monitors feed, water, ventilation, and temperature
  • Observe the general condition of the birds and note any signs of disease
  • Collect and remove dead birds from rooms and flights pens, accurately recording mortality

 

2.    Participate in the pheasant production cycle:

  • Performs daily room checks and general maintenance as required
  • Collects, sorts, wash, cull, and store eggs taking appropriate care
  • Participate in nest box construction, placement. and maintenance

 

3.    Participates in the incubation process by setting, transferring, and hatching eggs:

  • Assemble chick boxes and box chicks for distribution to brooder facilities
  • Delivers chicks to brooder facilities and assist with unloading
  • Monitors of of hatchery equipment and make minor repairs
  • Clean equipment between each group of chicks hatched

 

4.  Participates in equipment. building, and grounds maintenance:

  • Makes minor repairs to vehicles, mowers, and related equipment
  • Mows and operate weed eaters and pole saws as necessary; collect trash
  • Performs flight pen maintenance
  • Performs building cleaning, disinfecting, upkeep, and repairs
  • Loads and unloads supplies as needed

 

5.    Delivers birds to hunting sites.

  • Catch, crate, and move pheasants between rooms as well as for distributing them to hunting sites.

 

6.     Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1.  Requires knowledge,  skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school

  1. Requires ability to understand and carry out oral instructions
  2. Requires ability to perform manual labor

 

Physical Requirements

  1. Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis
  2. Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads

Work Hours:  7:30AM-3:30PM, 1/2 hr lunch; Jan 1-15: Tues-Sat; Mar 16-Jun 30: Fri-Tues; Nov 1-Dec 31: Tues-Sat; All shifts include 1/2 hr. lunch.  The specific dates may need adjusted to fit in with the hatch season production schedule and hunting season dates.  Total work time will be a maximum of six (6) months (978 hours) throughout the year.
