Job Overview

Under general supervision of the Stationary Engineer-Assistant Chief, performs joumey plumber work at Logan Correctional Center; installs, maintains, and repairs sanitary fixtures, fluid transmission systems and sewage systems; directs an offender crew in the repair of plumbing problems on systems; conducts on­ the-job instruction to develop offender skills in the plumbing trades; enforces and maintains disciplinary, safety, sanitary, security and custodial measures.


 

Job Responsibilities

1.    Installs, repairs, and maintains hot and cold water lines, sewage pipes, traps, backflow prevention (cross-connection control) devices and assemblies and appliances, i.e., water closets, lavatories; urinals, showers and all fittings.

2.    Instructs offenders in basic plumber tasks assigning work to offenders according to their qualifications.

3.    Assigns and monitors offenders in the basic plumbing tasks, plumbing repairs, preventive maintenance and checks that all jobs are completed.
4.   Cuts and threads pipe using stock and dyes, power-threading machines, power saws, wrenches an pipe machines.

5.    Certifies accurate inventory of all tools under his/her supervision as outlined in established procedures; orders materials and supplies.
6.   Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.                      .  .

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
  2. Requires the possession of a current valid plumber's license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  3. Reqiures the possession of a valid certificate as a Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) or the acquisition of the certificate with the probationary period of employment.
  4. Requires extensive knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, method and practices of the plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refridgeration trades.
  5. Requires working knowledge of laws relating to sanitation and public health.
  6. Requires skill in the use of all tools of the plumbing trade. 
  7. Requires ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, simple drawings or sketches.

  1. Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
