Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Superintendent 2 for James C Helfrich Game Propagation Center/Edward R Madigan. This position will exercise budgetary controls with operating and capital improvement budgets, monitors and utilizes professional expertise in the evaluation of pheasant rearing methods, serve as department representative and appear at public hearings and monitors, facilitates and assists in the hunting programs on the site. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize their supervisory experience, problem solving skills, and public speaking skills. James C Helfrich GPC/Edward R Madigan State Fish and Wildlife Area is a principal pheasant hatchery, producing 80,000 to 100,000 hatchlings annually. It is a 974 acre conservation area located south of Lincoln, IL. This horseshoe-shaped park enables visitors a large variety of fishing along a section of Salt Creek and a variety of hunting opportunities. Essential Functions
- Supervises and participates in the preparation and maintenance of the site's operation and financial records and reports.
- Serves a full-line supervisor.
- Monitors and utilizes professional expertise in the evaluation of pheasant rearing methods.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the media and interested groups or individuals.
- Monitors, facilitates and assists in the hunting programs on the site, including large or small game hunts.
- Coordinates and facilitates day use activities in the park
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill , and mental development equivalent to a bachelor's degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource area administration, or in museum administration, history, American studies or archeology
- Requires three years of supervisory experience affording training in various facets of managing an outdoor recreational park, or natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including pheasant propagation, animal handling, structural grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and outdoor recreation programs.
- Two (2) years of experience in the breeding, egg collection, and incubation of poultry.
- Two (2) years of assigning and supervising the work of subordinates
- Two (2) years of experience in applying appropriate levels of knowledge in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
- Two (2) years of experience in evaluating program effectiveness and making recommendations on policies and procedures.
- Prefers a Bachelor's in Agriculture or Animal Science or equivalent years of experience in poultry production
- Prefers two (2) years of knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and/or carpentry trades to make repairs on site

- Willingness to be on call 24 hours a day for animal welfare and hatching seasons

- Ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment
- Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year-round basis
- Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds
- Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds
- Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain
