Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Superintendent 3 at Rock Cut State Park.  This position: coordinates and participates in the maintenance of the site grounds, facilities, and equipment; inspects facilities for preventative maintenance;' monitors and implements site security/safety programs to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; travel on and off site including attending meetings inspecting facilities for preventative maintenance planning; responds to emergency situations including weather incidents, accidents, security issues and disturbances; reviews, analyzes, and incorporates proposals of natural and cultural resource specialists and others concerning short/long range plans for site management; supervises and conduct research related to site restoration, interpretations, and development; develops/implements public information materials and programs; promote department programs, activities, and philosophies; and serves as department representative at various meetings.  The ideal candidate will be able to utilize their supervisory skills, problem solving skills and communication skills.  Chiseled out of the state's far northern region is Rock Cut State Park in Winnebago County. Nearby are other "rocky" landmarks - the mighty Rock River and the place where wagons once forded it, Rockford. It's an area of rolling plains, interesting history and a wide variety of recreational opportunities.  We welcome all interested candidates to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as a full line supervisor.
  • Prepares, submits, and monitors operating and capital improvement budgets and annual plans of work.
  • Under direction, manages the operation of Rock Cut State Park and its satellites.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements site activities and programs compatible with the natural and cultural resource base.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the media and interested groups or individuals.
  • Explains agency policies, rules and regulations to site visitors and monitors to assure compliance with the same.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably with the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor's degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource area administration, or in museum administration, history, American studies, or archeology.
  • Requires four years of supervisory experience in managing an outdoor recreational park, or natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of extensive knowledge of agency programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Four (4) years of experience in assigning and supervising the work of assistants and staff members.
  • Three (3) years of experience in applying appropriate levels of knowledge in problem solving situations and adopting an effective course of action to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Two (2) years of experience in evaluating program effectiveness and making recommendations on policies and procedures.
  • Two (2) years of experience in expressing ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year-round basis.
  • Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and material utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
  • Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certifications within 6 months of employment.
