Position Statement

Under direct supervision, assists in maintenance objectives, safety/security programs and semi-skilled work for Rock Cut State Park and it's satellite sites (Harlem Hills State Natural Area and Rockton Bog State Natural Area).

Job Responsibilities

1.  Under direct supervision, assists in implementing the safety and security programs at Rock Cut State Park, Harlem Hills NP, and Rockton Bog NP:

  • Inspects public use areas for hazards such as flooding broken equipment, fallen trees and erosion
  • Monitors and inspects to assure buildings and gates are properly locked
  • Informs visitors of rules and regulations
  • Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors
  • In the event of emergencies or disturbances, contacts proper authorities

 

2.  Performs routine maintenance at site and its satellites:

  • Mows grass and weed eats, rakes leaves, trims or plants shrubs and trees
  • Collects and hauls trash
  • Plows snow, shovels snow, patches roads
  • Cleans and polishes floors
  • Disinfects washrooms and fixtures, cleans showers
  • Maintains and operates vehicles and equipment
  • Clears and maintains trails
  • Applies herbicide/pesticide

 

3.  Performs semi-skilled work by completing a range of duties associated with various building trades:

  • Makes minor repairs to electrical/plumbing/heating/ air conditioning equipment
  • Reroofs buildings
  • Constructs, installs, and maintains fencing
  • Repairs picnic tables
  • Repairs and replaces nesting boxes or platforms
  • Maintains site interpretive signs

 

4.  Serves as lead worker to seasonal or volunteer workers engaged in routine site maintenance and operational activities.

 

5.  Performs routine tasks related to the outdoor recreational programs:

  • Registers Hunters
  • Tends to hunter check stations
  • Sells camping permits
  • Directs traffic
  • Makes daily traffic count
  • Provides information and assistance to visitors
  • Traps and bands waterfowl
  • Marks trails
  • Provides support to site interpretive programs
  • Assists with interpretive duties and related maintenance, restoration, and improvements

 

6.  Operates heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, tree spades, stump cutters, snow plows snowmobiles post hole diggers, front-end loaders, road graders, farm machinery of 80 HP or greater, weed eaters, chainsaws: 

  • Constructs site projects
  • Repairs roads
  • Hauls ad delivers materials and supplies
  • Operates site water and/or wastewater facilities
  • Maintains plant equipment to include cleaning, lubricating, repacking bearings, and replacing various parts

 

7.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires two (2) year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of equipment and tools used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment, farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Requires ability to administer First Aid and CPR and maintain certification in such.
  • Requires ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds. 

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Employment Conditions

  • Requires possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Ability to obtain a pesticide license within 6 months of employment.

Work Hours:  Nov.-Mar.: Mon-Fri 7:30am-3:30pm (Sat/Sun off); April to Oct.:  Thurs-Mon 3pm-11pm (Tues/Wed off); 1/2 hr. lunches
