Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire two (2) Site Technician II's at Rock Cut State Park. This position will operate heavy equipment, make improvements to structures, perform basic electrical and plumbing repairs, carpentry and painting on buildings, clean restrooms, mow grass, plow snow, perform routine maintenance on site vehicles, register hunters, tend the hunter check stations, operate site water and or wastewater facilities, maintain and clean plant equipment and replace various parts when needed, and serves as lead worker on a seasonal basis providing guidance and training to staff. Rock Cut's 3,254 acres include two lakes: Pierce Lake, with 162 acres, and Olson Lake, with 50 acres, offers a retreat for people wanting to fish, ice fish, or ice skate. The park'​s hiking trails, horseback riding trails, cross-country skiing, wildlife watching and seasonal hunting programs, make it a year-round recreation destination. Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and program tasks associated with the operations of Rock Cut State Park, Harlem Hills NP and Rockton Bog NP on shift C.
  • Performs semi -skilled work associated with various building trades.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, tree spades, stump cutter, snow plows, snowmobile, post hole digger, front-end loader, road graders, farm machinery of 80 hp or greater.
  • Performs routine tasks related to the outdoor recreational programs.
  • Assists in implementing safety and security programs at the site.
  • On a seasonal basis, serves as lead worker to seasonal or volunteer workers engaged in routine site maintenance and operational activities.
  • Provides support to the interpretive programs of the site.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience following written and oral instructions.
  • One (1) year of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
  • One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
  • One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires appropriate, valid Driver's License.
  • Requires ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment.
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
  • Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.

OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
