Position Overview
The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Mental Health Technician Trainee at the Elgin Mental Health Center located in Elgin, Illinois. The incumbent will, for a period of six and not to exceed twelve months, receives instruction and training in caring for individuals with mental illness on a facility-wide basis. Performs entry level duties in the care and rehabilitation/treatment of patients who are mentally ill. Actively participates in classroom and on-the-job training classes. Verifies services are appropriate with respect to chronological age, developmental age and social maturity of the adult (18-64 years) and geriatric (65+ years) population. Communicates in Spanish for individuals who cannot speak or read English. Requires the ability to travel.
Job Responsibilities
- For a period of time from six and not to exceed twelve months, receives instruction and training in caring for individuals with mental illness on a facility wide basis.
- Receives hands-on training in the Interdisciplinary Team Process and observes the implementation of the Active Treatment/Daily Activity Schedule on unit, campus, and off facility grounds.
- Assists in the performance of duties to confirm assigned living unit and patient service environment is maintained to meet Department, Facility, and regulatory standards.
- Translates functions/procedures into Spanish for individuals who cannot speak or read English, in contacts with the general public, advocacy groups, patients, patient families and community organizations.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
- Requires the ability to speak, read and write Spanish at a colloquial skill level.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to walk and stand for a significant period of time, including stooping, bending and lifting.
- Requires the ability lift up to 50 pounds.
- Requires the ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patient or others.
- Requires the ability to travel.
- Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
- Requires ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance
