Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Assistant Superintendent 1 at Mackinaw River SFWA. This position will supervise and participate in the maintenance of all site facilities and buildings; coordinate and participate in groundskeeping and landscaping duties such as mowing, and trimming; service and repair equipment and maintain all service equipment records for the site; participate in farming activities; monitor site fuel, vehicles, and complete monthly tracking and reporting of both. The Mackinaw River was acquired in the 1960s by the Parklands Foundation, a Bloomington conservation group, and donated to the state in 1970. It features rolling timbered hills, former farmland, and two miles of river frontage with timbered land, open meadow, agricultural fields, and two interior ponds. This site is bisected by the Mackinaw River, which cuts through the Bloomington Moraine, creating deep ravines and high ridges. Essential Functions
- Under general supervision of the Springs Lake Site Superintendent, serves as a working supervisor, at Mackinaw River State Fish and Wildlife Area and assists at Spring Lake Fish and Wildlife Area, Manito Prairie Nature Preserve, Powerton Lake Fish and Wildlife Area, and Pekin Lake Fish and Wildlife Area.
- Assists in entering and completing reports and communicates with Site Superintendent in a timely fashion.
- Supervises and participates in the administration and operation of all site hunting and fishing programs.
- Operates vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds with air brakes to haul equipment to and from the site.
- Serves as a working supervison.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree with courses in parks and recreation, natural resource administration or public administration.
- Requires one year’s related functional supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource conservation, structural and grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and fiscal management
- Two (2) years of experience in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of the duties and responsibilities.
- One (1) year of experience assigning, supervising, and evaluation the work of subordinate employees.
- Working knowledge of boat usage and boating safety.

- Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
- Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
- Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
- Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
Work Hours: January 1 - October 31, Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm w/ a 1/2 hr. lunch; November 1 - December 31, Wednesday - Sunday w/ varied hours due to hunting program and a 1/2 hr. lunch
