Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Assistant Superintendent 1 at Giant City, Trail of Tears, and all satellites for The Office of Land Management. This position will operate vehicles with a total GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds; provide guidance and training to staff; perform groundskeeping and landscaping duties; plow and shovel snow; patch roads; make minor repairs to plumbing, heating, and air conditioning equipment; and participate in the preparation of the annual operating budget and annual Plan of Work. Giant City State Park was named for the unique impressions made by massive sandstone structures and a landscape with hundreds of species of wild flowers and more than 75 varieties of towering trees. Essential Functions
- Under general supervision of the Site Superintendent, supervises staff at Giant City, Trail of Tears, and all satellites. Plans, assigns and evaluates daily and weekly work projects for the operations, maintenance and upkeep to machinery, vehicles and groundskeeping.
- Serves as acting Site Superintendent in the absence of the Site Superintendent.
- Serves as working supervisor.
- Monitors and directs site staff in organizing and running outdoor recreational programs including camping, Natural Resource programs like hunting, camping, fishing, equestrian riding, and wildlife observation.
- Participates and supervises the activities of the subordinate staff engaged in inspecting site and satellites for safety hazards such as flooding, downed trees, malfunctioning maintenance equipment, damaged day use equipment, and facilities.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree with courses in parks and recreation, natural resource administration or public administration and one year's related functional supervisory experience.
- Requires valid and current Class A Commercial Driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of working knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource conservation, structural and grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and fiscal management.
- Two (2) years of experience in problem solving situations encountered in the performance of the duties and responsibilities.
- One (1) year of experience assigning, supervising, and evaluating the work of subordinate employees.

The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission.
