Job Responsibilities

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK:

Under the direction of the Adjutant, responsible for the facility's activities and recreational departmetn; evaluatting programs and implementation of new programs to enhance the member's lives at the facility.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  1. Plans, develops and supervises a comprehensive activities and recreation therapy program for members of the facility.  Conducts ongoing assessment of need for nw programs to meet the needs of all residents.  Conducts regular staff meeting to ensure programming provides maximum benefit for residents
  2. Serves as a working supervisor, assigns and reviews work; provides guidance and training to assigned staff; counsels staff regarding work performance; reassigns staff to meet day to day operating needs; establishes annual goals and objectives; approves time off; prepares and signs performance evaluations.
  3. Develops and implements the schedules of the Activity Department, ie. work schedules, meetings, internal facility activities, external activity trips, etc.  In the absence of staff, conducts scheduled activities or recreational programs.
  4. Ensures MDS and Care Plans are completed by assigned Activity staff.  Ensures documents are completed within facility guidelines and timelines.
  5. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment of the Activity Department.  Prepares and submits requisitions for replenishment of supplies or requests for new equipment.
  6. Coordinates with the Volunteer Services Director the need for volunteers for the implementation of weekend, evening, holiday and special events.
  7. Represents the Activity Department, attends various meetings as required by supervisor.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques and purposes of recreational therapy, music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy and/or drama therapy.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of the attitudes, problems and behaviors of individuals and groups.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of the theory and practices of mental health, developmental disabilities and social disabilities and their applications to situations of everyday living.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of individual and group behavior, normal and abnormal behavior and growth and development, and ability to work effectively with individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of the programs inherent in activity therapy and the ability to motivate interest in them.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of the nature of and specifications for equipment and supplies needed for the assigned activities and their proper care and maintenance.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of departmental regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Requires thorough knowledge and experience in planning, organizing and coordinating the entire activity therapy program in a facility.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of the therapeutic and educational values of leisure and recreational activities.
  • Requires ability to develop and supervise a comprehensive activity therapy program in a facility.
  • Requires ability to supervise and train staff, students and volunteers in carrying out specific projects.
  • Requires ability to supervise, plan, organize and lead recreational/leisure activities in accordance with individual's needs.
  • Requires ability to assess the individual's current level of functioning, strengths, needs and interests.
  • Requires ability to evaluate the individual's progress.
  • Requires ability to observe the individual's behavior and report on it with discernment.
  • Requires ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Requires ability to prepare complex records and reports, such as treatment plans and monthly reports.
  • Requires ability to supervise and maintain assigned facilities, supplies and equipment effectively.
  • Requires ability to work effectively and therapeutically with individuals and groups and stimulate their interest in activity therapy.
  • Requires ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and other professional staff within the facility and in the community.
  • In addition to English verbal and written skills, candidates may be required to translate, speak and write a foreign language at a colloquial skill level. Some positions may require manual communication skills.

Education Degree

  • Requires a bachelor's degree with a major in therapeutic recreation, music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, drama therapy, leisure studies or recreation with a specialization in recreational therapy, including successful completion of approved internship, fieldwork or practicum, supplemented by five years of progressively responsible professional experience as an Activity Therapist.
