Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is searching to hire a Cook I for the Manteno Veterans’ Affairs Home. The Dietary unit is responsible for the section of the meal preparation assigned, cooks and prepares food on a large scale to meet menu requirements for regular and therapeutic diets. Essential Functions

40% Prepares and cooks on a quantity scale basis for individuals and staff of the Manteno Veterans Home.
15% Operates standard cooking equipment such as mixing machines, steam cookers, toasters, food choppers, bake ovens, steam kettles.
10% Assists in the inspection of the kitchen to verify the kitchen is equipped with the necessary supplies and needed food.
10% Serves resident meals in dining rooms according to menu, diet, and as selected by the resident and or guest while maintaining portion control, good plate presentation, as well as following all sanitation practices and regulations.
10% Assists in the receiving, handling, and storage of food items checks kitchen and storage spaces to see that supplies and cleaning gear are ordered and on hand to meet requirements during work shift.
5% Completes all Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) mandatory training requirements, safety programs and participates in education workshops to maintain profession and competency.
5% Oversees supplies and equipment in absence of higher authority.
5% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and six (6) months of cooking experience which provides working knowledge of food preparation and cooking methods on a large-scale basis.
  2. Requires possession of a valid Food Service Sanitation Certificate issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health or requires possession of a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification from a program accredited by the American National Standards Institute( ANSI) Conference for Food Protection (CFP).

Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated education and experience requirements for this class.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health related policies and guidance.
  2. Requires the ability to pass a background check.
  3. Requires the ability to pass a drug screen and pre-employment physical.
  4. Requires ability acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  5. Requires the ability to work with various types of cleaning equipment and a variety of cleaning and sanitizing chemicals and solutions.
  6. Requires the ability to stand, stoop, twist, and bend for the duration of the shift, aside from official breaks and lunch period
  7. Requires the ability to handle extreme temperature changes such as a walk-in freezer or stove.
  8. Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  9. This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  10. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
