Position Overview - Building/Grounds Maintenance Worker
The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Building/Grounds Maintenance Worker located out of the Marseilles Training Site and Armory. This position under direct supervision, regularly performs a variety of semi-skilled labor or building mechanical work below the journeyman level and may directly assist skilled craftsmen; or operates heavy equipment, as required, in the maintenance of the facility and grounds. The Department of Military Affairs works with the members of the Illinois Air and Army National Guard. We welcome all interested applicants to apply.
Essential Functions
- Performs routine ground maintenance of the Marseilles Training Site and Armory.
- Performs routine interior maintenance of facility below the journey level.
- Maintains interior cleanliness of facility.
- Performs preventative maintenance and repairs lawn care equipment, i.e., push and/or riding lawn mowers, tractors, weed eaters, sprayers and other power equipment, including range equipment.
- Loads and unloads trucks sets up and takes down tables, chairs, etc.; moves office equipment; carries moderate to heavy items up to 80 lbs.
- Performs building security duties such as checking for fires and prowlers, checks windows and doors.
- Assists in the firing of a low-pressure boiler, cleaning flues, and keeping boiler room clean.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
- Requires one year of maintenance work experience preferably associated with the building/mechanical trades and/or heavy equipment operation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers the ability to follow oral and written instructions including blueprints and other diagrams.
- Prefers the ability to use power tools, operate heavy equipment and perform semi-skilled manual work in a safe manner.
- Prefers working knowledge of construction and maintenance tools, equipment, and materials.
- Prefers elementary knowledge of one or more of the building and mechanical trades.
Employment Conditions
1. Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.
2. Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
3. This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
4. Requires being on feet for long periods of time; the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
5. Requires being on hands and knees for extended periods of time.
6. Requires the ability to withstand extreme temperature changes.
7. Requires exposure to a variety of chemical cleaning agents.
