Position Statement

The Office of Land Management is seeking to hire a Site Technician 2 in the Region 2 area (Moraine Hills State Park). The individual in this position will, under direct supervision, carry out semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of site grounds, site buildings, and equipment associated with site operations at Moraine Hills State Park.  We encourage all qualified candidates to apply. 


The Office of Land Management (OLM) oversees nearly 400 individual parcels a/ land and Institutes a wide variety of programs and activities advocating outdoor recreation through sustainable use, conservation and preservation. The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees over 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group Interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. 

Job Responsibilities

1.  Under direct supervision performs a· variety of semi-skilled tasks-in the maintenance and operation of equipment used in the operation of the park at Moraine Hills/Nolo Bog:

  • For site construction and other projects uses manual or automated yard equipment such as tractors, batwing mowers, front end loaders, dump trucks, snow plows, bulldozers, backhoes, road graders, farming machinery.
  • Mows grass and prepares areas for grass seeding.
  • Operates tractors and 10-foot rotary mowers with hydraulic rams and 15-foot batwing mowers with hydraulic rams.
  • Operates tractors with front end loaders and blades for building and leveling hunter parking lots.
  • Operates tree spade and stump cutters to ensure these are clear through the park.
  • Operates truck and trailer with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds.

2.  Maints tree removal throughout the Region 2 parks:

  • Utilizes chainsaws and power pruners to remove and trim trees and ornamental shrubbery.
  • Picks up litter and hauls trash for the park.
  • Plows snow and patches roads where needed.
  • Applies pesticides and herbicides.
  • Maintains and repairs vehicles and equipment needed throughout the park.

3.  Monitors and repairs site equipment and facilities:

  • Repairs tables and restrooms throughout the sites.
  • Utilizes a high pressure washer in the shower buildings to clean and disinfect.
  • Maintains equipment such as trucks, mowers, tractors, chainsaws, weed whips and other miscellaneous equipment.
  • Changes oil and belts on site equipment.

4.  Participates in providing safety and security of the site property, employees, and the visiting public:

  • Directs traffic through the sites.
  • Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors.
  • Contacts proper authorities in the event of an emergency.
  • Works with and communicates closely with other tradesmen such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and machinists to ensure safety of job duties. 

5.  Participates in the Firearm Deer Season:

  • Mows hunter access trails with bush-hog style mowers.
  • Installs, maintains and removes special signage and collection receptacles used during the program.
  • Performs site lock down procedures and site security checks for public safety during firearm season.
  • Tends hunter check-in stations.
  • Collects hunting fees and sells hunting permits to the public.

7.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of a the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehouseing.
  • Ability follow written and oral instructions;
  • Ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations;
  • Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds;

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis;
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

  • Requires possession of a valid Class A Illinois Commercial Driver's License.
  • Requires ability to pass background check.
