Position Overview

Under general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor (Public Service Administrator); provides full range of professional nursing services in the care and treatment of offender patients confined at the Pontiac Correctional Center.  Provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services; review record keeping functions; maintain security of medical equipment and supplies; monitor and maintain compliance with safety and sanitation requirements; review medical records; screen offenders received on transfer.

Job Responsibilities


1. Provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services.  Administer medical/nursing treatments andmedications and care to patients; Complete patient assessments, nursing records and initial assignment sheets.  Assist physician on sick call lines; responds to doctors call to assist in the examining room with offenders, takes offender vital signs, completes medical forms using physician notes.  Consults with other medical personnel to plan and implement comprehensive patient care programs.

2. Reviews record keeping functions to check physician orders implemented.  Verify medications arechecked properly.  Reviews documents to ensure records of nursing care, patient treatment and 
observations are maintained.  Complete admission interviews to determine:  1)  offender's medical history 2) physical/mental health status, and 3)  placement within the facility.

3. Maintain security of medical equipment and supplies; complete medical equipment checks and inventoryas assigned.  Responsible to report any instrument or tool that is broken or needing repair to the appropriate department.  Needs to work closely with other medical staff as well as security in shank prevention.  Maintain security chain of custody on specimens required for forensic reasons.

4. Monitor and maintain compliance of safety and sanitation in patient treatment and examination rooms.  Identifies and addresses deficiencies by implementing reports and corrective actions.

5. Review medical records and complete health status forms on offenders.  Review alt offenders received on transfer by screening the individual and the medical record to ensure continuation of 
medical care.

6. Participates in the Quality Assurance Programs through concurrent monitoring of staff compliance withestablished policies and procedures; performs chart and program reviews identifies problems and discrepancies

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.



Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in nursing.

2. Requires completion of the Corrections Nurse Trainee program or one year of nursing experience (within the last five years) in an acute care setting

3. Requires licensure as a resigsterd nurse in the State of Illinois

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Preferred experience includes emergency room care, medical/surgical nursing, and/or ambulatory care.

Advances Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training and certification is preferred.

Requires knowledge of diversified professional nursing principles, concepts and practices.

Requires knowledge of pharmacology of commonly prescribed medicines and drugs and their therapeutic and possible adverse reactions.

Conditions of Employment

Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.

Requires the ability to complete an IDOC background check.

Requires the aiblity to pass the IDOC drug screening. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois.  Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy.  The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
