Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a Corrections Vocational Instructor to work at the Menard Correctional Center. This position is responsible for coordinating and providing vocational instruction to students on urban agriculture and traditional farming as well as developing programs and student evaluative measures. Essential Functions
- Coordinates and provides vocational instruction to students on urban agriculture and traditional farming methods to develop students practical job skills and knowledge.
- Develops program and student evaluative measures and reports.
- Maintains cost records.
- Provides professional guidance and counseling to assist students in making personal adjustments.
- Certifies all Department of Corrections and institutional safety, security, and sanitation procedures are followed.
- Administers daily count of assigned individual in custody workers and searches individual in custody workers for contraband.
- Distributes all tools and checks tools at the end of each day to ensure all tools are accounted for and present.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires two (2) years of practical journey level experience in the Agriculture.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with the practices, methods, tools, and use of materials in an agricultural setting.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience maintaining discipline, safety, and an effective learning environment.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience instructing others in the proper, safe, and skillful use of the tools, materials, and equipment for agricultural equipment repairs.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience preparing progress reports and evaluating training progress using suitable performance measures.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience gathering data related to security/safety workplace incidents.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience performing general maintenance and servicing of agricultural equipment.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience monitoring, keeping an accurate inventory of and control of tools, supplies, and materials used in the performance of duties.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience estimating time, labor, and materials necessary to complete projects as assigned to others.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience of assembling and maintaining shop equipment.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires completion of an approved course in correctional officer training within six (6) months of employment.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
- Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
