Position Overview

Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled duties required for the maintenance and repair of grounds and facilities located at Fort Massac State Park.

Job Responsibilities

1.    Performs semi-skilled work required for the maintenance and repair and facilities:

  • Builds concrete forms for the construction of camping pads
  • Patches roads
  • Makes minor repairs to electrical and plumbing systems
  • Builds, installs, and maintains historic wooden fences, furniture, and buildings around fort area
  • Repairs picnic tables
  • Constructs replicas or repairs period items at site


2.    Operates one ton truck for the collection and disposal of garbage/trash

  • Operates trucks, tractors, and tools while engaged in maintenance and improvement projects on the site's grounds, trails, and wildlife food plots, picnic shelters, and historic site area
  • Operates site wastewater facilities and maintains equipment
  • Completes daily and monthly reports


3.    Cleans and disinfects restrooms and shower buildings:

  • Rakes leaves
  • Mows grass and clears nuisance vegetation utilizing mowers, bush hogs, chainsaws and weed eaters
  • Applies pesticides and herbicides
  • Plants trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers


4.    Performs routine maintenance on site equipment, vehicles, and tools:

  • Registers hunters and tends hunter check stations
  • Sells camping permits
  • Directs traffic and makes daily traffic counts
  • Performs routine tasks as it relates to the recreational programs


5.    Informs visitors of site's historical background, facilities, rules, and regulations:

  • Cleans and cares for historical items, furniture, and displays


6.    Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.


Minimum Requirements

1.    Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
2.    Requires two year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

1.    Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
2.    Two (2) years of experience in the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
3.    One (1) year of experience in the ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
4.    One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
5.    One (1) year of experience in grounds keeping.

Employment Conditions

1.    Ability to pass background check.
2.    Valid driver's license.
3.    Ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment.
4.    Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis.
5.    Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
6.    Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
7.    Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Office of Land Management

The Office of Land Management (OLM) oversees nearly 400 individual parcels of land and institutes a wide variety of programs and activities advocating outdoor recreation through sustainable use, conservation, and preservation.  The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials.  OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Work Hours:  Position #1: Mon-Fri 7:30AM-3:30pm (Sat/Sun off); Position #2: Fri.-Tues. 9AM-5PM (Wed-Thur off); 1/2 lunch both shifts
