Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Site Superintendent 3 for Morrison- Rockwood State Park. This position: prepares, submits and monitors operating and capital improvement budgets and annual plans of work; monitors and implements site security and safety programs to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; reviews, analyzes, and incorporates proposals concerning short- and long-range plans for site management; develops and implements public information materials and programs; and appears at public hearings. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize their supervisory skills with a moderately large staff while engaged in site operations, maintenance, and interpretive activities. Morrison-Rockwood State Park is comprised of 1,164 acres, located north of Morrison in Whiteside County. It was established in 1971 and officially opened for day use that same year. The park is named for the city of Morrison and a combination of nearby Rock Creek and the heavily wooded park area--Rockwood. Lake Carlton, a focal point of the park, is a watershed impoundment constructed in 1969 by building a 38-foot high, 1,800-foot-long earthen dam across a stream. The lake was named in memory of L. Carlton Anderson, a local citizen who actively promoted the park and was an important civic and conservation leader. Essential Functions
- Under general direction, manages the operation of Morrison-Rockwood, Prophetstown, and Big Bend State Parks; Serves as full-line supervisor to a moderately large staff engaged in site operations, maintenance, and interpretive activities
- Directs and participates in the preparation and maintenance of the site’s operational and financial records and reports.
- Oversees and participates in the maintenance of site grounds, facilities, and equipment
- Plans, coordinates, and implements activities and programs compatible with the natural resource base
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the media and interested groups or individuals
- Serves as department liaison with various individuals
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource area administration, or in museum administration, history, American studies, or archeology.
• Requires four years of supervisory experience in managing an outdoor recreational park, or natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum.
Preferred Qualifications
• Two (2) years of thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource management, structural grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and outdoor recreation programs.
• Two (2) years of experience assigning and supervising the work of assistants and staff members.
• Two (2) years of experience problem solving situations encountered in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
• Two (2) years of experience evaluating program effectiveness and making recommendations on policies and procedures.
• Two (2) years of experience expressing ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Two (2) years of experience performing independent research to assure accuracy in restoration, interpretation, and development of the site.
• Two (2) years of experience in preparing organized programs to inform and entertain site visitors.

- Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
- Requires ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment
- Ability to administer First Aid and CPR and maintain certification in such.
- Ability to work under adverse conditions on a year-round basis
- Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
- Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
- Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
