Position Overview
Under general supervision of the Shift Supervisor, instructs and supervises Correctional Sergeants, Correctional Officers, and Correctional Officer Trainees; enforces and maintains discipline, safety, security, maintenance, sanitary, and custodial measures for the control of individuals in custody; monitors compliance with Departmental Rules, Administrative Directives, and Institutional Policies.
Job Responsibilities
- Supervises staff.
- Makes daily inspections of all buildings and housing units in his/her assigned area or zone.
- Arbitrates individuals in custody disputes.
- Establishes and maintains complete training records on all security personnel.
- Complies with key and lock control and tool control procedures in assigned area or zone by reporting broken, lost, or malfunctioning keys, tools, and equipment.
- Prepares, submits, and reviews a variety of reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Monitors compliance with all administrative directives and institutional directions when operating a vehicle to transport individuals in custody on writs, furloughs, and transfers.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school and completion of an approved correctional officer training program.
- Requires two (2) years experience as a Correctional Officer in a penal or security institution.
- Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the state requirements for this class.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Requires thorough knowledge of institutional rules, regulations, requirements for the control of individuals in custody.
- Requires working knowledge of individual and group attitude and behavior of residents in the penal or correctional institutions.
- Requires working knowledge of methods and techniques used in discipline of employees and persons in correctional institutions.
- Requires working knowledge of practices and procedures in prison administration.
- Requires ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with public officials, investigatory, and law enforcement agencies.
- Requires ability to supervise correctional officers and make independent decisions.
- Requires ability to prepare reports of unusual happenings, accidents, or violations of rules.
- Requires ability to train and supervise employees or individuals in custody.
- Requires ability to understudy and to assume duties of immediate supervisor in the event of vacation, sick leave, or emergency.
- Requires the ability to think clearly and exercises forceful initiative in emergency situations.
- Requires the physical ability to perform assigned duties.
- Requires ability to enforce discipline, safety, sanitation, security, and custodial measures.
- Requires ability to understand the use firearms.
