Position Overview

The Stationary Engineer position, located at Western Illinois Correctional Center, works on a small team of professional individuals to service the entire facility. The position performs a multitude of routine journeyman tasks. Candidates will be responsible for working as a team and individually to complete tasks within a timely manner. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, task oriented, and organized. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply. 
 

Essential Functions

  • Maintains the operation of the high/low pressure boilers, chillers, and mechanical rooms.
  • Performs Class “K” Wastewater Operator duties.
  • Performs routine maintenance of ventilation units and air handlers.
  • Completes maintenance and upkeep of diesel-driven generators.
  • Directs the work of individuals in custody workers in the installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of boilers, blowers, pumps, and compressors.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years of elementary school.
  • Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers the possession of a valid certification as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules and/or passed all three (3) EPA Section 608 Technician Certification Types (I, II and III).
  • Prefers the possession of a valid Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Class “K” Wastewater Certificate.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of post-apprentice program experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman or equivalent.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience operating and firing high and/or low    pressure stationary boilers.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience following oral and/or written instructions as a journeyman.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience using strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience practicing mechanical and analytical skills.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience troubleshooting and resolving issues within power plant operations or a similar setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience handling hazardous chemicals appropriately in the maintenance system.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires ability to work from heights (on ladders, scaffold, platforms, and lifts), stand for long periods, and move heavy equipment, materials, structures, and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds independently and up to 75-100 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires the possession of a valid Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Class “K” Wastewater Certificate.
  • Requires the possession of a valid certification as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules.
