Position Overview

If you desire to create and support lifelong reading, learning, and enjoyment then the IL Department of Corrections (IDOC) has an exciting opportunity for you! The IDOC is looking for a motivated individual to join their team as a Library Associate. This position performs library functions pertaining to the maintenance of the general and law libraries. In addition, the Library Associate supports facility programs and services, manages collection development, provides reference services, and maintains library order and security.  The ideal candidate for this position will be a team-oriented individual who is able to adapt to the changing needs of a dynamic, institutional library; be a self-starter and innovative thinker; and have a passion for Public Service.  All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
 

Essential Functions

  • Maintains access to library and library services and maintains adequate staffing of the library to keep service hours.
  • Examines, interprets, and fills user requests for materials using the institutional library or through inter-library loans.
  • Monitors individuals in custody library clerks in routine library operations such as circulations, filing, shelving and shelf reading.
  • Maintains and develops the library collection procedures.
  • Performs elementary bibliographic searches on subjects not requiring extensive research.
  • Promotes library services by preparing programs, poster display, bulletin boards and new book lists.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least two (2) years working under the direction of a professional librarian in a library setting.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of work experience with standard library methods and procedures.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of work experience applying library techniques.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of experience with acquisition, cataloging, and reference techniques in a library setting.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of experience organizing and maintaining reading and reference services in a library setting.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of experience providing general reference library services to patrons.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of work experience preparing and maintaining circulation and catalog files.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of experience selecting and recommending publications of interest and/or assisting library patrons in the utilization of the library.
  • Prefers at least six (6) months of supervisory experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires certification as a Notary Public be obtained during probationary period and kept current while in the position.
  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
