Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Technician II for the Office of Land Management at Spitler Woods State Park. This position will collect trash, pick up litter, rake leaves, mow grass, clear vegetation, disinfect restroom and shower buildings, maintain roadways, trails, and day use areas; plow and shovel snow; patch roads, operate chainsaw; perform necessary first aid and CPR; change oil and hydraulic fluids, change filters and belts, lubricate and make minor repairs; perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs and reroof/re-shingle buildings. Spitler Woods State Natural Area, a 200-acre site in Mt. Zion in Macon County, is home to one of the largest acreages of old-growth woods in central Illinois. Much of the site is dedicated as Spitler Woods Nature Preserve, providing additional protection for the site's valuable natural features. Essential Functions
- Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled maintenance and program support tasks at Spitler Woods, Lincoln Trail Homestead, and Calamus Lake NP.
- Operates trucks, bushhogs, tree spades, woods mower, power augers, stump cutters while engaged in site maintenance, improvement, and construction projects.
- Inspects public use areas for safety hazards.
- Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and other equipment.
- Performs minor repairs to buildings and structures.
- Provides functional supervision, leadership, and direction to Conservation Workers, volunteers, and other site staff.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
- Requires two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
- Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
- One (1) year of experience in informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
- One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
- One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
- Requires appropriate, valid Driver's license
- Ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment
- Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis
- Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and site resources, buildings and grounds
- Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds
- Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain
- Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR Certification

Office of Land Management

The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
Work Schedule:
April 1st - October 31st: Sunday - Thursday, 7:30am to 3:30pm; November 1st - March 31st: Monday - Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm; Scheduling subject to change based on operational needs. The ability to work the in season holidays is required.
