Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Technician II at Peabody River King for the Office of Land Management. This position will operate boat and outboard motors for placing fish attracters and buoys in water; operate 2 ton dump truck having a GVVVR of 31,000 pounds hauling equipment with a trailer having a GVWR of 24,000 pounds all with Air Brakes; perform needed concrete work and repairs; reroof structures, sweep, mop, wax, and polish floors; repair and maintain small equipment such as weed eaters and chainsaws; register hunters and operate hunter check stations; assist with dog trials and site specific hunting programs; assist in the rescue of injured or stranded complex visitors. Once a surface-mined area, Peabody-River King State Fish and Wildlife Area is used today by anglers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts looking for recreational opportunities in southwestern Illinois. Some 1,800 acres of the 2,000-acre site were donated to the Illinois Department f Natural Resources by the Peabody Coal Co. in 1994. We welcome all qualified candidates to apply.
Essential Functions
- Under direct supervision, Operates heavy equipment i.e. bulldozers backhoe tree spades, 80 h.p. farm machinery for maintenance and improvement of grounds, trails, waterways, wildlife habitat plots, and picnic shelters.
- Maintains and makes improvements to site structures including shower buildings, concession buildings, and picnic shelters.
- Participates in site grounds maintenance.
- Performs routine maintenance on site vehicles and equipment.
- Assists in implementing safety and security programs at the site.
- Provides leadership and direction to seasonal employees, volunteers, and other staff.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
- One (1) year of experience in following written and oral instructions.
- One (1) year of experience in informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
- One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
- One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.

OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
