Position Overview
This position is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of a survey crew engaged in collecting data for the purpose of preparing plans for roads, bridges, culverts, and land acquisition plats and documents.
Essential Functions
- Obtains accurate survey measurements in a timely manner to ensure there is no delay in the completion of projects.
- Collects accurate and meaningful survey data obtained through the use of surveying equipment.
- Performs calculations and prepares preliminary drafts showing topographic features.
- Trains survey crew personnel in the use and maintenance of equipment and instruments.
- Ensures that all work activities are completed with due consideration to safety issues and proper utilization of available equipment.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current registration as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Illinois; OR completion of a bachelor’s degree in land surveying from an accredited college or university, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination or Surveyor Intern license PLUS one year of experience in the practice of land surveying; OR completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related science including 24 semester hours of land surveying courses, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Surveying examination or Surveyor Intern license PLUS one year of experience in the practice of land surveying
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying.
- Ability to make complete field surveys and right-of-way surveys.
- Skill in the use of modern survey equipment, computers, and office and survey processing software.
- Ability to perform third or higher order survey work and to make moderately difficult technical and land surveying computations and estimates.
- Ability to prepare right-of-way plats and plans using computer aided design and drafting (CADD) workstations.
- Ability to analyze and interpret land surveying and/or hydrographic data.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Requires extensive districtwide travel which may include overnight stays.
- Requires the ability to work occasional limited overtime during evenings and weekends.
- Requires the ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep terrain, wade in water, and perform physically demanding outdoor work in a variety of conditions and weather, including but not limited to active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.
- Requires successful completion of a background screening.
- Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
