Mental Health Specialist I - Position Overview

Under direct supervision, performs beginning professional level duties and assists in reviewing, assessing, monitoring and implementing behavioral programs.  Assists in performing professional psychological/behavioral activities.  Maintains evaluative data.  Serves as an active member of assigned committees, training programs and professional staff meetings.  Assists in attending to individuals’ personal and transportation needs.

Mental Health Specialist I - Job Responsibilities

1. Performs beginning level professional duties and assists in the reviewing, assessing, monitoring, and implementing of behavioral programs.

 

2. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

 

3. Discusses individuals’ progress with family members/guardians, friends and community service representatives to enhance individuals’ response to treatment.

 

4. Serves as an active member of assigned committees, training programs and professional staff meetings.

 

5. Provides in-service training, technical guidance and direction to staff and student workers assigned to assist in the provision and documentation of psychological/behavioral needs or individuals.

 

6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Mental Health Specialist I - Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to (1) a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences and successful completion of a comprehensive training program at the Mental Health Specialist Trainee level,

Or

(2) two years paraprofessional experience in, or applicable to the care, treatment, and development of individuals with mental illness or intellectual disabilities and successful completion of an approved training program.

Mental Health Specialist I - Conditions of Employment

1. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.

2. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.

3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.

Mental Health Specialist Trainee - Position Overview

Under immediate supervision, for a period of no less than six months and not to exceed twelve months, receives instructions and training in the ability to review, assess, monitor and implement behavioral programs.  Receives training in the maintaining of evaluative data and the ability to provide technical guidance and direction to less experienced staff.  Assists in attending to individuals’ personal and transportation needs.

Mental Health Specialist Trainee - Job Responsibilities

1. For a period of no less than six months and not to exceed twelve months, receives instructions and training in the ability to review, assess, monitor and implement behavioral programs.

 

2. Observes individuals’ response to treatment and reports to the Clinical and Behavioral Director on findings.

 

3. Observes meetings with clinical/behavioral department staff and individuals’ family members/guardians

regarding responses to individuals’ treatments.

 

4. Completes informal classroom training and on-the-job training regarding behavioral programs and the assessments of individuals and their behavioral needs.

 

5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
