Position Overview
The Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to hire a Switchboard Operator for the Ludeman Developmental Center located in Park Forest, Illinois to operate the Switchboard in accordance with the rules as set out in the Switchboard Manual. Performs routine repetitive work operating the switchboard, primarily involving responsibility for accuracy and speed in placing and answering calls. Places and receives local and long distance and operator assistance phone calls for the facility.
Essential Functions
- Operates the switchboard in accordance with the rules as set out in the Switchboard Manual regarding the acceptance, forwarding, placement and confidentiality of calls.
- Utilizes paging system to contact staff and forward messages as requested.
- Serves as receptionist.
- Receives and sorts all incoming mail.
- Responds to and maintains records for emergency calls such as fire, medical, police, etc.
- Performs routine clerical tasks involving the operation of simple manual or automated office equipment.
- Uses Switchboard computer to produce traffic and phone usage reports and to update the computerized directory to reflect changes of staff and individuals.
- Places calls for maintenance services during on-business hours in accordance with instructions as outlined in the Switchboard Manual.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
*Qualifying state employees in the Employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
- Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends and holidays.
- Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
- Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
