Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Power Shovel Operator for the Office of Realty and Capital Planning. Individuals in this position will possess a Class A Commerical Driver's License with air brakes and have the ability to operate gas or diesel heavy construction equipment with air brakes that have GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds to haul equipment. This position will require travel to various sites in the performance of duties. We welcome all qualified candidates to apply.
Essential Functions
- Under general supervision, operates and maintains the heavy equipment assigned to the Office.
- Conducts routine maintenance on the heavy equipment.
- Completes routine reports on equipment usage and hours and completes time reporting documents.
- Loads equipment and operates semi with low boy trailer to haul equipment to and from project sites.
- Operates hydraulic pumps, rammer/tamper and ARC welders.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of eight years of elementary school.
- Requires one year of experience in the operation of large capacity internal combustion power shovels.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of construction techniques and practices and the basic principles of internal combustion engines.
- Two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of large capacity power shovels or dredges on a production basis.
- Two (2) years of experience in the ability to perform excavation and dredging operations to precise engineering specifications.
- Two (2) years of experience in the ability to read blue prints and understand oral instructions.

- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
- Requires valid Class A Commercial Driver's license with Airbrakes designation.
- Requires one year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free of incident which could result in license suspension or revocation.
- Requires ability to travel four days every week.
- Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
