Position Statement

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and janitorial duties at New Salem State Historic Site; operates equipment and tractors; makes minor electrical and plumbing repairs; assists journeyman carpenters and other skilled trades people to facilitate finished construction projects. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs repair and maintenance on interior and exterior buildings and structures; makes minor plumbing repairs, unclogs drains, repairs leaking faucets; makes minor electrical repairs, replaces ballasts in lights, replaces outlets and lights, etc.; makes minor repairs to heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment; cleans coils, changes filters, etc.; works from ladders and scaffolding to make minor repairs to roofs and gutters and to set stage lights, repair flag poles and trim trees; assists journeyman carpenters and other skilled trades people to facilitate finished construction projects; sets up and tears down tents and displays for special events. 
  2. Performs a large range of ground maintenance and landscaping duties; operates ground maintenance equipment such as riding mowers, grass seeders, chain saws, log splitters, stump cutters and end loaders; mows, repairs, seeds and maintains turfs; applies herbicides and pesticides; plants and transplants bushes, trees, flowers, sod, grass seed; prunes and trims bushes and trees; clears grounds of litter and debris; operates trucks and tractors; repairs and maintains roadways and walkways; assists in the repair and maintenance of grounds equipment, including mowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, blowers, end loaders, trucks and tractors.
  3. Drives manual transmission split axle trucks attached to 30 foot trailers with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds and air brakes to transport equipment and supplies.
  4. Performs janitorial duties at visitor center and offices; cleans, sweeps, and mops floors, vacuums, dusts; disinfects restrooms and fixtures; empties garbage and trash.
  5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery;
  • Requires knowledge and experience in turf management and landscaping.
  • Requires working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment;
  • Requires knowledge and experience in making minor electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment repairs;
  • Requires possession of a valid Class A Illinois Commercial Driver's License with air brakes designation;
  • Requires ability to drive and operate manual transmission split axle trucks attached to 30-foot trailer, trucks, tractors, mowers, grass seeders, chain saws, log splitters, stump cutters and end loaders;
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads on a regular basis which may exceed fifty (50) pounds;
  • Requires physical ability to work on ladders, scaffolding and buckets above the ground;
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities programs, rules, and regulations;
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis;
  • Requires ability to read diagrams and blueprints;
  • Requires ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Work Hours:  May-Oct.: M-F 7am-3pm; Nov-Apr: M-F 7am-3pm w/rotational weekend schedule that includes Sat-Sun 8am-4pm and alternate days off.
