Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as an Electrician to work at Pontiac Correctional Center. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, task oriented, has excellent organizational skills, shows great attention to detail and is a team player. This position performs journey level electrical work at the facility. Responsibilities also include constructing, installing, altering, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures at the facility. Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs journeyman electrical work which consists of constructing, installing, and altering electrical systems according to the most current National Electrical Codes.
  2. Maintains and repairs electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures at the facility according to the most current National Electrical Codes.
  3. Repairs and replaces parts according to the most current National Electrical Codes.
  4. Prepares reports and keeps records of materials and supplies used.
  5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  2. Requires successful completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program AND four (4) years full-time journey level electrician experience, OR eight (8) years of full-time journey level electrician experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience applying established national, state, and local electrical codes.
  2. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from blueprints, simple sketches, and drawings.
  3. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience making rough sketches and estimating time, labor, and materials necessary to complete work orders.
  4. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience using tools of the trade such as voltmeters, amp meters, ohmmeters, and other calibration and testing equipment apparatus.
  5. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fire alarm systems.
  6. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience maintaining inventory and accurate tool count.
  7. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience inspecting unsafe or faulty conditions in production, transmission, and utilization of electricity.
  8. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting building automation systems.
  9. Prefers at least five (5) years of experience working with journey level telecommunications work, such as data networks, cable TV, and security cameras.


Conditions of Employment

  1. This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  2. Requires ability to work from heights (on ladders, scaffold, platforms, and lifts), stand for long periods, and move heavy equipment, materials, structures, and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds independently and up to 75-100 pounds with assistance.
  3. Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  4. Requires ability to pass a drug screen.  The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
