Job Responsibilities

1. Serves as the first line supervisor to the nursing staff in their assigned area

  • Assigns and reviews work
  • Provides guidance and training
  • Counsels staff regarding work performance
  • Reassigns staff to meet day to day operating needs
  • Establishes annual goals and objectives
  • Approves time off
  • Adjusts first level grievances
  • Effectively recommends and imposes discipline up to including discharge
  • Completes and signs performance evaluations

2. In accordance with established standards and administrative policies, functions as a nursing supervisor on assigned shift and unit with 24-hour accountability to supervise the delivery of care by evaluation, assessments, procedure, and outcome

  • Determines staffing needs and assures adequate staff coverage to meet the needs of assigned areas
  • Supervises professional nursing personnel
  • Reviews nursing assessments and nursing care plans for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness of plans
  • Coordinates and communicates with other team members in all departments
  • Conducts investigations and pre-disciplinary meetings

3. Provides direction and control to all personnel relative to improvement of unit management and patient care

  • Develops and ensures the implementation of care plans and nursing programs

4. Acts as liaison between resident, families, staff and the Interdisciplinary Team in order to provide real holistic care to the resident

  • Provides MDS Assessment information as scheduled
  • Completes and maintains the Braden Scale, Resident Acuity, Census Report, Nursing Statistics, and the monthly MAR review 
  • Communicates with Nursing Administration
  • Participates in formulation of yearly capital budget by recommending needed equipment for the units
  • Participates in selection and evaluation of unit supplies

5. Conducts in-service training classes and unit meetings

  • Participates on committees as assigned or requires
  • Participates in formulating annual budgets for nursing services
  • Completes and maintains reports as required
  • May replace other nursing supervisors as necessary or required
  • May act as ADON in her absence as directed or assigned
  • Serves as on call manager on a rotating basis

6. Performs other duties as required or assigned that are within the scope of the duties enumerated above

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois
  2. Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in nursing administration
  3. Three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in nursing administration

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Extensive knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice and of recent developments in the field of nursing
  2. Extensive knowledge of public and business administration principles and practices; agency programs and service objectives, activities, and operational systems; staff utilization and employee motivation; labor and employment development; agency and procedures
  3. Three (3) years experience developing and managing a supportive agency program; analyzing administrative problems and adopting an effective course of action; developing, installing, and evaluating new and revised methods, procedures, and performance standards
  4. Three (3) years experience exercising judgement and discretion in developing, implementing, and interpreting departmental policies and procedures; estimating and budgeting for future needs and cost of personnel, space, equipment, supplies and services; developing and maintain cooperative working relationships

  3. Able to bend, stoop, twist, stand and walk for protracted periods of time, use fine and gross hand manipulation

  6. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or lastminute overtime
