Job Responsibilities

Under direction of the nursing supervisor and in accordance with established standards and policies, assigns, reviews, coordinates and participates in resident care activities; serves as lead worker on assigned shift and unit. Plans, implements and updates care plans for residents; monitors adherence to resident care and treatment plans; coordinates staff assignments.

  1. Serves as lead worker on assigned shift and unit; assigns and reviews work assignments of staff; provides guidance and training to assigned staff; advises immediate supervisor regarding work performance of staff.
  2. In accordance with established standards and policies, assigns, reviews, coordinates and participates in resident care activities. Serves as facility unit coordinator to all nursing personnel on shift, as assigned by supervisor. . Provides professional nursing care and treatment to residents using assessment skills and clinical knowledge, carries out physician orders and documents care provided. Communicates with nursing staff on other shifts to assure continuity of care. Communicates pertinent information regarding resident condition and needs to medical provider and personnel management and resident care to nursing supervisor. Maintains contact with resident families as required.
  3. Ensures proper maintenance of medical charts and clinical records for residents.  Uses computer to order lab tests prescribed by medical provider and maintain records/forms according to facility policy.
  4. Plans and participates in care plan meetings; plans, implements and updates care plans for residents; coordinates resident care activities; serves as a resource for other staff members
  5. Orders and dispenses prescribed medications, treatments, diets and medical supplies; completes appropriate forms

6.  Prepares nursing personnel assignments; details staff as needed.

7.  Participates on various committees to improve standards of nursing care. Conducts or assists with in-service training classes/ward conferences for resident care staff.

8.  Recommends and/or orders supplies and maintains equipment; advises nursing supervisor of equipment and supplies needed.

9.  Follows and supports the philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of nursing service and the facility.

10.  Responds to calls in a crisis situation.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Requires extensive knowledge of professional nursing principles and procedures and theory.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of normal and abnormal reactions to various drugs and medications.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of set up, application and use and care of specialized medical equipment.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of the methods and techniques utilized in developing educational programs.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of pharmacology of commonly prescribed medicines and drugs and their therapeutic and possible adverse reactions.
  • Requires ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships with patient care staff.
  • Requires ability to instruct non-nursing personnel in the proper practices and procedures of patient care.
  • Requires ability to apply emergency medical techniques such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, control of bleeding and airway maintenance.
  • Requires ability to guide, motivate, orient and educate assigned patient care staff.
  • Requires ability to present educational materials in a clear and concise manner.

 

Employment Conditions

 

  • Requires ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois

 

Education Degree

  • Requires (a) graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing and two years of progressively responsible
  • professional nursing experience; or (b) a bachelor's degree in nursing and one year of professional nursing experience; or (c) a master's degree in nursing.
