Position Overview - Lincoln's Challenge Acadamy Director

The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Director for the Lincoln’s Challenge Academy in Rantoul, Illinois. This position, under the administrative support of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois, administers and effects the affairs of the Lincoln's Challenge Academy. Formulates, directs, and controls facility programs such as the fiscal, personnel, training, recruitment, and mentoring programs. Formulates policies and directives for all Academy matters and fosters community/civic relations., We welcome all interested applicants to apply.

Essential Function

  • Plans, reviews, and directs all programs and activities.
  • Conducts staff meetings.
  • Establishes, directs, and institutes training programs.
  • Directs the preparation of the budget, review, control, and approval of same.
  • Maintains required records, prepares periodical and special reports on all operations.
  • Appears before civic, lay, press, and professional groups to discuss the purposes and programs of the Lincoln's Challenge Academy.
  • Counsels parents, relatives, and friends of cadets
  • Serves as a member of the State Advisory Committee.
  • Serves as the proponent authority for policies, procedures and regulatory guidance associated with the functions of the Director position.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Military & Civilian:  Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years college with course work in public or business administration, sociology, psychology, education administration, or social welfare.
  • Civilian:  Requires six years direct experience working with or leading at-risk adolescents/teenagers in a non-profit, governmental or faith-based setting such as youth services, social services, educational administration or law enforcement agencies.
  • Military & Civilian:  Requires ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with employees, public officials, the press, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications Cont.

  • Military & Civilian:  Requires extensive knowledge of the principles and modern practices of public and/or business administration.
  • Military & Civilian:  Requires ability to administer the affairs of an institution, to supervise and instruct staff in work requirements and to direct programs for student activity.
  • Military & Civilian:  Requires ability to promulgate and endorse disciplinary, safety, security, and custodial measures.
  • Military & Civilian:  Requires ability to think clearly and exercise initiative in emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Military & Civilian:  Prefers the ability to maintain satisfactory working relationship with agency officials, employees and outside groups.
  • Military:  Prefers active membership in the Illinois National Guard or retired (20 years) Armed Forces and/or attainment of military rank of E-9 to 0-5.
  • Military & Civilian:  Prefers a background in organizational leadership

Employment Condition

  • Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.
  • Requires physical activities such as lifting, bending and other routine exercises, as needed.
  • Must adhere to organizational grooming standards and present a professional appearance while wearing organizational issued, activity appropriate attire while on shift.
  • Requires the possession of a valid driver’s license.
