Position Overview:
The Department of Healthcare and Family Services, Division of Child Support Services is seeking to hire a highly qualified and motivated Spanish speaking individual to join our Southern Region Downstate Operations staff in the role of Child Support Specialist Trainee. The candidate will participate in a 12-month training program receiving training in and assisting with gathering data via face-to-face interviews and other sources to become familiar with IV-D policies and procedures. Additionally, this position will assist in reviewing, preparing, managing, and establishing the modification and enforcement of court orders for child support accounts.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication, mathematical, organizational, and analytical skills to be successful in performing the operations of the Southern Region team while maintaining working relationships with other governmental professional organizations.

Essential Functions
- Under immediate supervision, participates in an agency-sponsored child support services training program of up to twelve months in duration
- Receives training in and assists with gathering data via face-to-face interviews and other sources and/or reviewing and preparing petitions, including those from other IV-D agencies/jurisdictions for Custodial Parents (CPs)
- Assists with managing the establishment, modification, and enforcement of court orders
- Assists with resolving customer service issues in a Call Center environment through direct customer contact or with other state agencies, legal partners, etc., by phone, written correspondence, and e-mail
- Receives training in and assists with interpreting and reviewing support orders, both judicial and administrative, for case review and entry into the system
- Assists with calculating financial obligations and support balances related to child support accounts
- Translates information and documents into Spanish for non-English speaking people
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to (4) four years of college with coursework in psychology, sociology, social welfare, business administration, or finance or equivalent educational attainment in a related field; or, education and experience equivalent to (2) two years’ college with a minimum of (8) eight semester hours in finance and (4) four years of experience in the Child Support Enforcement program area; or, (8) eight years’ experience performing paraprofessional functions in the Child Support Enforcement program area
- Requires ability to speak, read, and write Spanish as a colloquial skill level
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to pass a national background check prior to employment due to accessing confidential federal tax information
- Requires the ability to utilize and maintain state issued equipment such as a laptop
- Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate
