FORENSIC SCIENCE ADMINISTRATOR II- ASSISTANT LABORATORY DIRECTOR

Position Overview

The Illinois State Police (ISP) Forensic Sciences Command (FSC) is seeking a motivated individual to fill a Forensic Science Administrator II position at the Rockford Forensic Science Laboratory under the Division of Forensic Science.  The ISP FSC is the third largest forensic science laboratory system in the world, and the Rockford Forensic Science Laboratory is one of seven laboratory facilities in the state.  This individual will directly supervise a staff of approximately eight individuals in the assigned forensic science sections and two evidence technicians.  This leader will be responsible for maintaining the highest level of quality for the analytical procedures being.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate a work history of leadership and be a critical thinker.  This position will work cooperatively with various laboratory staff members and officials in the criminal justice system. The State of Illinois continually strives for a workforce that reflects the growing diversity within the state. Essential Functions

• Functions as an assistant laboratory director of the Rockford Forensic Science Laboratory and performs supervisory duties as the direct supervisor of assigned sections.
• Administers the laboratory's Quality Assurance (QA) program.
• Responsible for the analysis of casework and the administration of the assigned sections.
• Administers facility maintenance programs and orders equipment for the laboratory.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope and duties enumerated above.
• Attends professional meetings and seminars in management or forensic science.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires a bachelor's degree in a natural or forensic science, preferably supplemented by a master's degree in one of the biological, natural, physical or forensic sciences, or related discipline.
• Requires three years of professional forensic science work experience such as would be gained at the advanced caseworker level.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prefers five (5) years of work experience performing laboratory techniques and analytical methods utilized in one of the forensic science discipline areas.
• Prefers two (2) years of work experience supervising subordinate staff at a laboratory or business providing for their career development.
• Prefers three (3) years of work experience applying State, Federal, and local criminal laws and regulations as they relate to the forensic examination and chain-of-custody of forensic evidence.
• Prefers one (1) year of work experience in developing, implementing, and enforcing policies, procedures and quality standards for a forensic science laboratory.
• Prefers one (1) year of work experience triaging forensic evidence submission and casework approach accounting for the various forensic science laboratory services provided and the different disciplines’ examination techniques.
• Prefers one (1) year of work experience in developing a laboratory budget for resources to include personnel and equipment needs or assisting in the preparation and implementation of the laboratory budget.
• Prefers one (1) year of work experience in the principles and practices of public and business administration including preparing administrative reports.
• Prefers a Master’s degree with coursework in one of the biological, natural, physical, forensic sciences, or related discipline.

Conditions of Employment

• Successful completion of initial and on-going, random, alcohol and drug screens.
• Successful completion of a background investigation.
• Successful completion of a polygraph examination.
• Ability to maintain credibility in providing courtroom testimony.

• Ability to travel on an as-needed basis
• Ability to maintain proficiency in forensic science casework on an as-needed basis.
