In this position you will be trained on how to assist taxpayers and their representatives with delinquent tax issues, learn the current Illinois tax laws, and be given the tools to effectively communicate with taxpayers to bring them into compliance. Essential Functions

  • Under immediate supervision, for a period of six to twelve months, participates in an Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) sponsored training program receiving training and controlled working assignments designed to develop broad knowledge, understanding, and practical skills necessary to perform the duties of a Revenue Collection Officer I.
  • Receives on the job training assignments designed to provide work experience of increasing difficulty for the purpose of gaining experience and developing skills.
  • Receives indoctrination and instruction in tax laws, rules and regulations, work procedures, interviewing techniques and methods and techniques of investigation pertinent to the collection program.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college -OR- four years of experience in collection work, or a related collection field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of work experience in a delinquent tax compliance and collection field.
  • Two (2) years of experience following oral or written instructions in a work environment to accomplish a task.
  • One (1) year of experience using tax processing software systems (GenTax, MyTax Illinois, MyLocalTax, or similar tax processing software) in a professional capacity.
  • One (1) year of experience preparing comprehensive written and oral reports.
  • Intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software in an office environment.
  • Intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Word or similar word processing software in an office environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires access to an automobile.
  • Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.  This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Employment in this position is conditioned upon the employee living within the defined work area within six (6) months of the employee’s start date and for the duration of employment in the Revenue Collection Officer Series.
