Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer Assistant Chief for the Treatment and Detention Facility located in Rushville, Illinois to assist the Stationary Engineer Chief in monitoring and leading all phases of the physical plant operation and maintenance program. Ensures that equipment runs safely, economically, and within established limits.  Assists Stationary Engineer Chief in determining and planning projects. Consults with architects, construction engineers, and project managers regarding Project Improvement Fund (PIF) contracts. Prepares or assists in the preparation of administrative documentation.

Essential Functions

  • Assists the Stationary Engineer Chief in monitoring and leading all phases of the physical plant operation and maintenance program which serves the Treatment and Detention Facility.
  • Serves as designated lead worker to lower-level staff. 
  • Ensures that equipment runs safely, economically, and within established limits.
  • Assists Stationary Engineer Chief in determining and planning projects.
  • Consults with architects, construction engineers, and project managers regarding Project Improvement Fund (PIF) contracts. 
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of administrative documentation.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires five (5) years of experience in the operation of commercial or institutional power plant or as a skilled craftsman in the mechanical or building trades.
  • Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 Rules*

* The possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Section 608 encompasses positions which perform refrigeration/air-conditioning work that has the possibility of release of chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four (4) years of specialized experience in the operation of high-pressure/low-pressure coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their apparatuses.
  • Four (4) years of specialized experience in water treatment and various chemicals used in boiler systems.
  • Four (4) years of specialized experience diagnosing problems in mechanical, electrical, heating and air conditioning/HVAC systems
  • Four (4) years of professional experience directing the work of employees and outside contractors engaged in the operation and maintenance of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
  • Four (4) years of experience taking utility readings, logging records, ensuring maintenance schedules are followed, reviewing and actioning maintenance reports for technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.  
  • Four (4) years of experience diagnosing building and mechanical issues, recognizing potentially dangerous situations, and implementing appropriate emergency responses.
  • Four (4) years of specialized experience in public health Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and building codes of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
  • Four (4) years of experience following and expressing complex ideas clearly both orally and in written form in the field of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.   

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires the ability to serve on an on-call basis after business hours, weekends and holidays and to utilize agency supplied material/equipment (i.e., pager, cell phone, etc.).
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
