Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Portable Scales Operator Trainee. The successful candidate will, under immediate supervision, for a period of up to 24 months, receive on the job training in the operation of portable scales and the function of the weight enforcement unit; receive instruction to deploy portable and semi-portable scales with Illinois State Police for enforcement purposes; learn the regulations of the Illinois Vehicle Code and Illinois Size & Weight Laws and departmental safety rules to determine compliance; receive instruction in weighing, measuring, determining and calculating fines for overweight vehicles; with guidance from higher level staff sets up traffic control and protection and ensures trucks are weighed in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; may be called to testify at court proceedings; travels to work sites.
Essential Functions
- For a period of up to 24 months, receives training in the transportation, placement, and operation of semi portable scales, leveling ramps, and wheel load weigher scales at random times and locations throughout the geographically assigned areas.
- Receives training to complete tasks including:
• Oversize/Overweight (OS/OW) deterrent.
• Vehicle maintenance.
• Troubleshooting scale malfunctions.
• Scale equipment maintenance.
• Other special projects. - Receives training to prepare required documentation and completes daily activity reports.
- Receives training on regulations of the Illinois Vehicle Code and Illinois Size and Weight Laws.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers three (3) years of experience establishing and maintaining professional relationships.
- Prefers two (2) years of further education and/or work experience.
- Prefers working knowledge of personal computer and web-based applications.
- Prefers ability to effectively and accurately communicate both verbally and in written form.
- Prefers ability to record the results of daily production and prepare required reports.
- Prefers history of working in a safety sensitive environment.
Conditions of Employment
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with one year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.
- Requires ability to travel.
- Position is considered safety sensitive and requires the candidate to submit to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing as well as a pre-employment physical.
- Requires completion of Illinois State Police scales training within 24 months of hire.
- Requires ability to work occasional overtime with possible after hour callouts and overnight stays.
- Requires ability to bend, stoop and lift at least 50lbs.
- Requires ability to work in unfavorable weather conditions and varied environmental conditions including engine noise, dust, dirt, grease, oil, petroleum and other chemicals.
