Position Overview
This position is accountable for performing inspections, sampling, testing, documentation and reporting to ensure that all aggregate produced by a source meet the requirements of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), are of good quality and specified gradation, and are also produced in accordance with the Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS), and the Standard Specifications and Special Provisions.
Essential Functions
- Inspects aggregate material and aggregate sources and monitors plant operation to ensure that the aggregate produced meets the specifications required for each individual project.
- Maintains complete and accurate material testing records.
- Prepares complete and accurate reports for Materials Integrated System for Test Information and Communication (MISTIC) and other reporting systems.
- Acquires a working knowledge of a wide variety of inspection and testing procedures, specifications, and checklists.
- Observes and verifies compliance of aggregate producers with the department’s Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS) program, as well as the Manual for Aggregate Inspection.
- Remains knowledgeable of the production and sampling of recycled concrete and slag aggregates and requirements of accepting virgin and processed materials.
- Performs duties in the resolution of material deficiencies and the proper documentation of material exceptions.
- Minimizes production of marginal or unacceptable material by overseeing manufacturing procedures to assure compliance with approved standards in the AGCS programs.
- Maintains effective working relationships with material producers to ensure that only proper quality material is delivered to Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) contracts.
- Assists in calibrating and maintaining laboratory testing equipment to ensure information is accurate.
- Obtains any needed certification and performs the required inspections on new products and raw feed as required within the specifications.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, or a job-related technical/science curriculum PLUS thirty months of engineering experience OR six years of engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS) program, the Standard Specifications, and the Special Provisions.
- Successful completion of the IDOT Quality Management Training Program for both PCC Level I (CET 030) and HMA Level I (CET 029) (formerly known as QC/QA HMA Level I and PCC Level I).
- Strong communication skills.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Requires successful completion of a background check.
- Requires successful completion of the IDOT Management Training Program for 5-day Aggregates (CET 021) or 3-day Aggregates (CET 020) with the 2-day upgrade (CET 027).
- Requires extensive travel.
- Requires occasional night work.
- Requires occasional overtime.
- Requires ability to lift materials up to 50 pounds.
- Requires success completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
