Position Overview
This position is accountable for performing the operational and technical functions of the Communications Center (CC) by receiving, accurately recording, and transmitting messages and information regarding highway and bridge conditions, incidents, and roadway conditions. 

Essential Functions

  • Promotes efficient and effective use of the system by managing all calls in an encouraging, helpful, polite, and concise manner, while supporting co-workers in a cooperative team effort.
  • Operates radio, telephone, telemetry, and other communications/computer systems in accordance with department policy and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.
  • Operates the Reversible Lane Controls, Highway Lighting Control System, Pumping Station Supervisory Control System, Radio Base Stations, Highway Advisory Radio Program System, and other technology systems.
  • Executes procedures to rectify hazardous conditions on the district’s highways and exercises moderate independent judgment in responding to emergency situations under the general supervision of a shift supervisor or in conjunction with more experienced district personnel.
  • Accurately prepares keyboarded and written documentation, recording all communications and incidents.
  • Obtains and disseminates information concerning traffic conditions, roadway restrictions, permit construction, and accidents to ease traffic flow and protect state property and motorists.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.  Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of two years of college OR four years of experience working in an emergency call or dispatch center in which the incumbent dispatched personnel or resources and generated incident or call taking reports.
  • Keyboard a minimum of 30 words per minute.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Radio dispatching experience, ideally in emergency services.
  • Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with co-workers, agency officials, and the general public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and utilize maps.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to keyboard and enter data into computer systems and databases.
  • Ability to prepare detailed and accurate incident documentation.

This is a 24-hour operation. The incumbent will work outside of the regular 8:00 am - 4:15 pm / Monday-Friday hours. Shifts are bid twice annually and are based on seniority.
